THE ESPLANADE

The picture above was taken on the promenade near the top of High Street in – I would guess – the late 1890s and very likely on a Bank Holiday weekend. Look how much has changed in a hundred years!

The prom between Bath Street to just past Water Street including the area shown above, was known as Mostyn Parade named after E.M. Lloyd Mostyn MP who led the fundraising drive to raise the £1,000 needed to build it before the arrival of the railway in 1848.

It remained Mostyn Parade until 1889 and thereafter was called The Esplanade. It was wider, safer and offered a better sea view than anywhere else on the prom - some parts of which were not completed until more than half a century later.
